A number of restaurants have increased wages to attract employees during our nation’s current labor shortage. Yet, many are seeing that increased wages aren’t bringing back or recruiting new talent. Additionally, a March 2022 Association survey found that 75% of customers prefer the existing tipping system.
There’s a reason people choose tipped restaurant jobs – they know the economics are in their favor. For many servers, they’ve chosen restaurants as a career because their industry skills and knowledge mean high earning potential in a job that’s flexible to their needs. For others, they’re looking for something – extra income, customer interaction, business skills – that make the opportunity ideal.
The current system of tipping means that the industry can fit all their needs. This is why operators and tipped employees have worked together for years to preserve the tip credit and tipping system.
The Association supports the many tipped employees who are choosing to fight legislation that would eliminate their earning potential.
