Soft skills employees learn working in restaurants

These competencies are highly sought after in job candidates.

Employees who excel at soft skills, including customer service, communication, and teamwork, are highly sought after.

The restaurant industry’s skills landscape is evolving with technology while preparing its employees for success at the same time.

With breakthroughs in areas such as mobile communications and transactions, AI, automation, and other hard-skill technologies, financial and operational efficiencies are on the rise.

Soft skills proficiency is more important than ever, especially as the use of technology increases.

Employees who excel at soft skills, including customer service, communication, and teamwork, are highly sought after, whether they work in a restaurant setting or outside of the industry. It turns out that working at a restaurant is a great training ground for developing and honing those competencies.

Here are soft skills employees learn by working in a restaurant.
  1. Customer Service: Restaurants require employees to interact and provide service to a wide range of customers daily, dealing with their state of mind, handling their requests, solving problems and complaints, and providing them with positive dining experiences. Learning this skill teaches patience, empathy, problem solving, and the ability to professionally adapt and respond to customers’ needs.
  2. Communication: For restaurant employees who take orders, relay information to the kitchen, coordinate with colleagues, and resolve issues, communication is integral to smooth operation. Workers who can actively listen and convey needs clearly can mitigate the negative effects of miscommunication.
  3. Teamwork: Restaurants are team-oriented workplaces, where every role requires the collaboration of each staff member. Employees must learn to share tasks and support each other to achieve their goals and build interpersonal and problem-solving competencies. Knowing how and when to lead or follow takes practice, as does knowing how and when to avoid unnecessary conflict. Teamwork also helps build closer relationships among co-workers, which can make the job more fun. When teams work together effectively, performance improves.
  4. Multitasking: The ability to manage multiple tasks effectively is a valuable, organizational skill that can be applied across various roles and industries. Employing such techniques as task grouping, prioritization, and time blocking not only optimizes time usage, but also prevents productivity bottlenecks. In addition, it teaches employees to be better equipped to handle diverse responsibilities, meet deadlines and thrive in fast-paced professional settings.
  5. Time management and work ethic: Restaurant work teaches the importance of showing up on time and in support of the team. During shifts, time management is critical and requires following schedules, setting priorities, and optimizing workflows to ensure top customer service.
  6. Creative and critical thinking: Restaurant employees must be able to problem solve quickly. Creative, critical thinking helps them navigate unexpected situations, anticipate customer needs and find creative solutions to mitigate situations as they arise. Conflict resolution is part of this skill set.
