What is Kids LiveWell?

Orange Teeth

The National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell program makes it easy for parents and children to choose ‘better-for-you’ meals when dining out.
It’s a voluntary program where restaurants commit to offer meals, side dishes and beverage options that meet rigorous nutrition criteria. We created the program with registered dietitians, in collaboration with public health and consumer advocates.
The Association is proud to promote these delicious, good-for-you options for restaurants' youngest guests. These meals are certified to have sugar, sodium, and calorie thresholds – and designed to make both parents and children happy.

How can my restaurant company join Kids LiveWell?

Once a restaurant is interested in joining KLW, they take the following steps:
  • Step one: commit to joining KLW by emailing to get started.
  • Step two: gather nutrition information for menu items from suppliers (e.g., calories, sodium, fat, sugar) and submit to Food Directions via an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Step three: work with the Association and Food Directions to: 1) tweak menu items as needed and get two meals and two sides certified; and 2) adhere to the default beverage policy. This step can take a month to six weeks depending on menu items.
  • Step four: post KLW logos on menu, promote on social media, and let customers know about the restaurant’s commitment to kids’ nutrition. Make sure nutrition information is available upon request.

How much does the program cost?

Kids LiveWell is free to participating restaurants.

What are the benefits for participating restaurants?

  • Benefit from publicity efforts about Kids LiveWell and your brand -- by both the Association and other organizations.
  • Join a community of operators demonstrating their commitment to healthier children.
  • An icon that can be used on your menus to indicate certified Kids LiveWell choices for kids’ menu items.

I’m not a restaurant operator, but I want to support Kids LiveWell

What they're saying ...

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation applauds the National Restaurant Association and its members for expanding the Kids LiveWell program and taking additional steps to increase the visibility of ‘better-for-you’ options. This type of commitment and effort is critical to making the systemic shifts that are needed to ensure that children and families have a chance to live healthier lives.

I commend the National Restaurant Association for refreshing Kids Live Well, especially incorporating healthier default beverages into the program. It's a first step towards rebuilding our nation’s culture of food and nutrition.

Nancy E. Roman, President and CEO of Partnership for a Healthier America

We hope the updated Kids LiveWell criteria will encourage all restaurants to make healthier beverages the default with children’s meals and drop soda, lemonade and other sugary drinks from kids’ menus. The Kids LiveWell updates also acknowledge that a healthy meal should include a fruit or a vegetable and that 1% or fat-free milk should replace varieties high in saturated fat (i.e., whole and 2%).

A national poll revealed that over 80% of parents want restaurants to increase healthy options and decrease unhealthy items on children’s menus. The experience of restaurants that have shifted to healthier food and beverage items shows that families want healthy options for their kids and that they’re good for business.

We’re pleased that the National Restaurant Association has updated its Kids LiveWell program. Since children get a quarter of their calories from eating out, all restaurants should make the children’s menu healthy to support children and their parents.
