Washington, D.C. – The annual Restaurant Law Center Legal Summit, covering some of the most pressing legal issues facing the industry, is now available on demand. The Summit, held Oct. 14-16, provides attendees the opportunity to confer on the most important legal issues facing the restaurant industry. For the first time this year, the event was virtual, and can be viewed free entirely online by registering for access. 

“The move to a virtual environment made the Restaurant Legal Summit more accessible than ever, allowing for all levels of industry representatives across all segments to participate,” said Angelo Amador, Executive Director of the Restaurant Law Center. “In this incredibly challenging year we saw attendance grow nearly 700% over last year. The information shared by regulators and experts from our nation’s top law firms could provide valuable guidance on the important issues facing our industry today.”

The Special Keynote address at this year’s summit was a virtual fireside chat with the Solicitor of Labor Kate O’Scannlain, who discussed the U.S. Department of Labor’s approach to enforcement under Secretary Eugene Scalia. She provided insight and updates on several laws and regulations, including:

  • Key legal clarifications in the proposed rulemaking regarding the tip credit and tip pooling.
  • FLSA Classification issues including joint employer and independent contractor.
  • Clarification on Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) determinations on COVID-19 related enforcement.
  • Updates on WARN Act issues in the age of COVID-19
  • Discussed recently revised and supplemented explanations to certain portions of the paid leave regulations in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA).
  • Updates on the requests for information recently open for the Family Medical Leave Act and paid leave.

In addition to the keynote, the agenda covered topics like the Paycheck Protection Program and other assistance programs; diversity and inclusion; Business Interruption insurance claims; the future of full-service restaurants; and a legislative and regulatory outlook.
