Female-with-LaptopIn addition to online proctoring, ServSafe plans to develop virtual classroom training, which will make the program even more flexible and easy to access.

Recognizing the industry’s need for increased flexibility, especially during the pandemic, the National Restaurant Association is offering online proctoring for its ServSafe food-safety certification program.

The service makes testing more convenient for restaurant employees, especially during COVID-19.

Sherman Brown, executive vice president of Training & Certification for the National Restaurant Association, said the goal is to provide easily adaptable training to improve the way industry employees are able to train and earn certification.

“The COVID-19 outbreak necessitated a sudden change in the way training and assessments of all types are carried out,” he said. “But our strategy has always been to provide a choice as to how learners and examinees access our materials. We believe providing a choice for learning will result in a better overall experience.”

Brown added that online proctoring would continue even after the pandemic ends. Other plans include developing virtual classroom training to make the program even more flexible and easy to access.

He cited convenience, lack of travel and reduced costs as benefits of the program’s online component. Nevertheless, there are challenges that still need addressing, including the need for private spaces so students can take the exams uninterrupted, and access to technology and the Internet.

As part of its goal to create a high-quality education ecosystem, ServSafe will make the program available in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.

ServSafe partnered with ProctorU, a remote proctoring specialist, to create the online testing solution. The online component features a live proctor, who greets and guides test-takers through the launch process. The online proctoring solution is available 24/7.

Over the past 30 years, the ServSafe Food Safety Training program has led the way in providing comprehensive educational materials to the restaurant industry. Backed by the latest science, research, and the FDA Food Code, the materials help define the industry’s food-safety best practices.
